Wisdom Teeth Disimpactions: Why and When to Consider Removal
Service Description
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the final teeth to erupt in your mouth, typically emerging between the ages of 17 and 25, a period often referred to as the "Age of Wisdom." While wisdom teeth may not require extraction if they fully develop in a functional, painless, cavity-free, and hygienic environment with healthy gum tissue, they do necessitate regular professional cleanings, annual check-ups, and periodic X-rays to monitor any changes. When a wisdom tooth fails to emerge completely, it is termed "impacted." Approximately 90% of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. Impacted teeth can damage adjacent teeth, become infected, and are difficult to clean, leading to gum disease. Oral bacteria can also enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the heart, kidneys, and other organs. In some instances, cysts or tumors may form around the base of the impacted tooth, posing further risks by damaging the jaw and surrounding nerves. Reasons for Extraction: Most individuals opt to have their wisdom teeth removed for one or more of the following reasons: 1. Impaction: Wisdom teeth may become trapped in the jawbone or gums, causing pain. 2. Improper Angling: They may erupt at incorrect angles, putting pressure on adjacent teeth. 3. Lack of Space: Many jaws do not have sufficient room for an additional set of molars. 4. Cavities or Gum Disease: Difficulty in cleaning wisdom teeth can lead to decay or gum issues.
