Sinus Lifts
Sinus Lifts: Preparing Your Jaw for Dental Implants
Service Description
A sinus lift is a bone-grafting procedure necessary when the upper jaw lacks sufficient bone to support dental implants, especially in the area of the bicuspid or molar teeth. What It's Used For? Sinus lifts are performed in case of: 1. Tooth Loss: Many individuals have insufficient bone in the upper jaw, particularly in the back, due to lost teeth. 2. Periodontal Disease: Gum disease can contribute to bone loss. 3. Resorption: Missing teeth can lead to the resorption of surrounding bone, causing the sinus floor to drift downward. 4. Sinus Proximity: The maxillary sinus may be too close to the upper jaw for implants. How is the Sinus Lift Procedure Performed? The sinus lift involves the following steps: 1. Incision: An incision is made in the gum tissue where the implant will be placed. 2. Bone Exposure: A "trap door" of bone is created and pushed into the sinus cavity, lifting the attached sinus membrane. 3. Graft Material Placement: The space beneath the lifted membrane is filled with bone-graft material. 4. Closure: The gum tissue is stitched closed. In some cases, implants can be placed during the sinus lift, but a healing period of six to nine months may be necessary depending on the graft material. Types of Bone-Graft Materials Used: 1. Autografts: Bone harvested from the patient's own body. 2.Allografts: Prepared bone from tissue banks or other species. 3. Synthetic Grafts: Materials like hydroxyapatite.
