Orthognathic Surgeries
Orthognathic Surgery: Transforming Function and Aesthetics
Service Description
Orthognathic surgery, or corrective jaw surgery, is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to address various skeletal and dental irregularities, including misalignment of the jaws and teeth. This procedure aims to enhance chewing, speaking, and breathing, while also significantly improving facial aesthetics. Conditions Indicating the Need for Orthognathic Surgery: 1. Difficulty Chewing or Biting: Struggling with food intake can indicate misalignment. 2. Difficulty Swallowing: Impairments in swallowing may require surgical intervention. 3. Chronic Jaw Pain or TMJ Issues: Persistent pain in the jaw or jaw joint can be alleviated through surgery. 4. Excessive Wear of Teeth: Misalignment can lead to abnormal wear. 5. Open Bite: A gap between upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed. 6. Unbalanced Facial Appearance: Asymmetry can affect self-esteem. 7. Facial Injury: Trauma may necessitate corrective surgery. 8. Birth Defects: Congenital conditions may require surgical correction. 9. Receding or Protruding Jaw: Jaw positioning can impact function and appearance. 10. Inability to Close Lips: Difficulty achieving lip closure may indicate jaw misalignment. 11. Chronic Mouth Breathing and Sleep Apnea: These conditions can be addressed with surgery. Surgical Process: Orthognathic surgery is typically performed in collaboration with an orthodontist, often involving braces before and after the procedure, along with retainers post-braces. Close coordination between the surgeon and orthodontist is crucial for ensuring proper alignment post-surgery. The surgery may involve one or both jaws and is performed under general anesthesia, usually with a nasal tube for intubation. This technique allows for the teeth to be wired together during surgery, minimizing external incisions by accessing the jaw through the inside of the mouth. The surgeon makes precise cuts in the mandible and/or maxilla and repositions the bone segments to achieve the desired alignment. Benefits of Orthognathic Surgery: 1. Enhanced Functionality: Improved chewing, speaking, and breathing capabilities. 2. Aesthetic Improvement: A more balanced and attractive facial appearance. 3. Pain Relief: Alleviation of chronic jaw pain and associated symptoms.
