Cyst Removal Surgeries: Addressing Dental Cysts for Better Oral Health

1 hSmile Speak Dental Clinic

Service Description

A cyst is a sac of tissue filled with fluid or soft material, which can form in various locations within the mouth. Dental cysts commonly develop at the tips of the roots of non-vital teeth or around the crowns and roots of buried teeth. These cysts typically arise due to dead or infected teeth resulting from trauma or infection. In some cases, they may also form due to developmental issues or, though rarely, as part of a genetic syndrome like Gorlin's syndrome. Problems Associated with Dental Cysts: While many dental cysts can remain asymptomatic for extended periods, they may lead to several issues when they do become problematic: 1. Infection: Cysts can become infected, resulting in pain and swelling. 2. Bone Loss: They can gradually replace healthy bone tissue, weakening the jaw. 3. Pressure on Adjacent Structures: Cysts may exert pressure on nearby teeth and oral structures. 4. Impediments to Oral Function: They can disrupt normal dental and oral functions. Treatment Approach: The primary treatment for a dental cyst involves surgical excision or removal, typically performed under local anesthesia. Cysts are most frequently found around impacted wisdom teeth but can also occur near any teeth that fail to erupt properly. During the procedure, both the cyst and the impacted tooth (if applicable) are removed simultaneously. For larger cysts, more complex surgical techniques may be required, which can include bone reconstruction if necessary.
