Understanding and Treating Bruxism

1 hSmile Speak Dental Clinic

Service Description

Bruxism is a condition characterized by the grinding, gnashing, or clenching of teeth, often occurring unconsciously during the day or night. Approximately 70% of sleep-related bruxism cases are linked to stress and anxiety. Signs and Symptoms: 1. Loud teeth grinding or clenching that may disturb your sleep partner 2. Flattened, fractured, chipped, or loose teeth 3. Worn enamel, exposing deeper layers of the tooth 4. Increased tooth sensitivity 5. Jaw or facial pain and soreness 6. Tight or fatigued jaw muscles 7. Earache-like pain not related to ear issues 8. Dull headaches originating from the temples 9. Damage to the inside of the cheek from chewing 10. Indentations on the tongue Most people remain unaware of their bruxism until informed by a partner who hears the grinding at night. Waking up with a dull headache or sore jaw is a common indicator. Early intervention is crucial to prevent further wear on the teeth. Treatment Options: 1. Stress Management: Addressing the underlying causes of stress can help alleviate bruxism. 2. Nightguards: For mild cases, a nightguard can be provided to protect the teeth. 3. Full Mouth Reconstruction: Severe cases may require a comprehensive approach to protect and preserve the teeth, supporting bone, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
